Amaravati will be India's first state capital to have district cooling
Amaravati, the new state capital of Andhra Pradesh, has just finalized the plans to build a district cooling system in its government complex area. With support from District Energy in Cities Initiative partners, the city has successfully awarded the tender for a $21 million district cooling system to provide cooling to new buildings in this greenfield city which will reduce electricity demand by 40 to 50%. This is the first state capital in India to develop district cooling.
As the first Indian replication city of the District Energy Initiative to realise investment, it provides a scalable model for designing, tendering and procuring district energy across the country.
Amaravati officials first connected with the Initiative in November 2017 at the Initiative’s national workshop in Delhi. The Initiative and partners will continue to support Amaravati to assess not in-kind cooling technologies to increase the environmental benefits of the project even further, including renewables, trigeneration and alternative refrigerants.
